In 2002, FDOT began studying the idea of converting off-road vehicle lanes on I-95 to HOT lanes.
In response, VDOT began an extensive planning process along I-495 focused on adding lanes for off-road vehicles. FDOT also received funding from VPPP to evaluate HOT lanes on I-95 in Miami-Dade County. Other works in progress include adding price-regulated lanes on the median of I-75 and on the north-south portion of the Palmetto Highway in Miami. The bus toll lane is not a HOT lane as it does not offer discounts on tolls depending on vehicle type or occupancy.
